Consular & embassy legalization

Consular and embassy legalization in Abidjan

Legalization certifies the authenticity of the signature, the capacity of the signatory and the seal on a document so that it is valid abroad. Because Côte d'Ivoire is not a party to the Apostille Convention, legalization is the standard procedure for most Ivorian documents sent abroad and foreign documents presented in Côte d'Ivoire.

Ivorian documents going abroad

The typical route is: prior certification depending on the document (town hall, court, supervising ministry, notary…), legalization by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Côte d'Ivoire in Abidjan, then legalization by the embassy or consulate of the destination country. We prepare the file, handle drop-offs and pick-ups and track every step.

Foreign documents for use in Côte d'Ivoire

A document issued abroad (France, USA, Lebanon, China…) generally has to be legalized in the issuing country and then by the competent Ivorian embassy or consulate. Our international presence lets us start the process directly in the country of origin.

Why entrust us with legalization?

Requirements vary from one embassy to another (originals, copies, translations, appointments, consular fees) and a single mistake can cost weeks. We check that the file is admissible before submission, save you the trips and keep you updated until the legalized document is in your hands.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between legalization and an apostille?

Both authenticate a public document. An apostille is a single formality valid between member states of the Hague Convention; legalization is longer and usually goes through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then the embassy of the destination country. Côte d'Ivoire currently uses legalization.

How long does legalization take?

From a few days to several weeks depending on the document, ministry and embassy. We give you a realistic estimate in the quote and keep you informed at each step.

Do I need to come in person?

No. You can hand your documents to us in Abidjan or send them by courier from anywhere in Côte d'Ivoire or abroad.
